chuzz...DELL "takes a licking and keeps on ticking"...

borrowing a line from john cameron swayze.....the common denominator of cpq/ibm/hwp and their lack of gains and or losses in the desk top business appears to be the eagerness to participate in the sub 1k retail consumer market....do they fail because of thin margins due to a lesser manufacturing efficiency or perhaps it is not possible to offer a current state of the art box at such low prices...dell seems to posture it's price reductions on "moore's law"...offering the lesser or older technology as the "intro" model....i am curious of a breakdown of dells unit sales...if asp at or about 2k, they either sell up or dell buyer more sophisticated than best buy/circuit city type....dell has established a market that keeps them solvent...the retail competitors have played into a consumer demand game, much as the auto industry did years ago with rebate campaigns to push inventory...rebates stop, so do sales...ibm/cpq/hwp prices go up, sales go down...basic flaw in marketing...can easily lower a price as in the case of dell, but can never raise a price as in the former...
in spite of analysts predictions i see the price trend for "real" pcs to stabilize and trend up with new technology....or if dell decides to build to order a "volkspc"...even with less than dell margin, it still will be a "pay me before i build" model...unlike extended terms for "please let me stuff the channel", that has degraded the pc business..
your analytical insight and feedback appreciated and as always welcomed...cheers, ed a.
