50 Million Telecom Subscribers Set New National Record
Korea Economic Daily

The number of subscribers for
telecommunications services -- including local
phone, pager, mobile phone (cellular and PCS),
and PC communications -- has surpassed the 50
million mark for the first time in the nation's 100-year telecom history,
according to the Ministry of Information and Communication. The ministry
said that the total number of telecom subscribers reached 50,249,700 as of
the end of last February.

One key factor in the increase is burgeoning mobile phone service, which
has more than doubled subscribers since the launching of the PCS service in
October, 1997. Mobile phone service users surpassed 13.9 million last year,
up sharply from 3.1 million in 1996 and 5.6 million in 1997.

The subscriber increase was especially remarkable in February due to fierce
competition among mobile phone service carriers. [ SK Telecom ] has shown
the largest increase, adding 355,000 subscribers, followed by KT Freetel
(206,000), Hansol PCS (204,000), Shinsegi Telecom (131,000) and LG
Telecom (107,000).

With active promotion of the Internet, paid subscribers of PC
communications reached 5.2 million in February, showing continual growth
from 1.7 million in 1996, 3.1 million in 1997, and 4.7 million last year.

In contrast with the general up-trend, the number of local phone subscribers
has remained about 20.5 million since 1997, while pager users decreased
severely to 8.4 million as of the end of February from 15.1 million in 1997.
