The blunt force trauma of unlimited war on their soil turned the Germans that survived into pragmatists. I lived in West Germany/Germany for a total of seven years between 1975 and 1994 and found their feelings towards America and Americans ranged from polite cordiality to warm friendship and even gratitude. If nothing else, I think they were forever thankful that they ended up under the aegis of the US, Britain, and France as opposed to the sanguinary and repressive domination of the Soviet Union.

If one ever hoped to see the defining difference between Democracy and Communism, it was plain as day in the differences in the two Germanys when they reunited in 1990. It will be at least another decade before the former East Germany attains a parity in infrastructure and standard of living with the West.
