So assuming a mid year tape out - it is quite credible that they will parts for testing in the fall.

It is also very possible that first silicon will smoke (literally.) Merced is not a simple design.

This "scenario" is essentially correct.

The Merced design is complete and the chip is being "assembled" into its final form, and DRCs, routing verifications, etc. are being performed.

Moreover, the 0.18 micron process is complete and production is being ramped up in 3 fabs using IA32 products.
