Tim,

Thanks for welcoming us "newbies" to this thread.

I've had a very high interest in CDMA since the FCC PCS Spectrum auctions began and QCOM has been on my watch list since Sprint PCS followed PrimeCo in choosing CDMA for their US digital buildout. I finally established a long position in QCOM 1/5/99 so was able to avoid the rush to purchase this stock.

I "bookmarked" the QCOM thread here on SI about 15 months ago and backtracked all the original postings that preceded this. Since then I've been poking my head in (lurking not posting) regularly.

This is indeed one of the best threads on SI. I'd like too congratulate ALL the long time posters whose patience has been amply rewarded.

I am including below, brief excerpts from a few articles (in addition to what I had gleaned from following this thread) that prudently encouraged me to take a position in QCOM.

From "Careful Investor" - By Mary Rowland - 12/28/98
"7 stocks careful investors should consider in '99"

Amid all the momentum noise, it can be difficult to find stocks that are real values with room to grow. But that's exactly what I want to start off 1999: a portfolio of stocks with the promise of growth that I can buy at good value. Value and growth are not mutually exclusive. Naturally, I want stocks with some oomph. But I'd like to find them before they've been fully valued by the market. One way to do that is to look for sidetracked stocks, those stocks that have fallen out of favor with Wall Street for one reason or another; stocks that might provide a buying opportunity now.

Stock screens -- and your own research -- narrow a big field down to a few that are real values. An oil driller, a wireless leader and a temp supplier make my list. <snip> That leaves me with seven in '99 that may be worth some of my money. Finishing with lucky 7

1.) I already own Qualcomm (QCOM), which is one of the leaders in wireless communications. It's in a rapidly growing industry and seems primed for a turnaround. <snip>

Remember that I'm not ready to endorse these stocks as "buys," but I am ready to say that these are seven stocks that a value investor may want to think long and hard about in 1999.

From "Options Tactician" By Terry Bedford 1/5/99

As a technical analyst, I spend a great deal of time running systems and checking money flow and momentum trends.

Finally, I am adding a new call position for Qualcomm (QCOM). The stock is very near an upside breakout at 56. This stock could easily rally to 64-65.

NOTE HOWEVER (one month later with his target achieved):

From "Options Tactician" By Terry Bedford 2/5/99

I'm going to do a little housecleaning. Although I love Qualcomm (QCOM) and Solectron (SLR), both stocks are likely to be swept lower in the wave of selling that will surely hit technology.

TOO BAD TERRY - TA doesn't tell the WHOLE story
