Skull of a Bear

It was a strange week
always odd, when someone has to be let go
and days in advance you know, and they don't.

This time was different
with his letters of termination
and recommendation all ready to fly

I found I'd been played
bastard had another job already
spent his last two weeks on my time lining it up.

Coward, he couldn't even face me
couldn't show at my office to do closure
though he did snag his last cheque; I cancelled it.

And I went away
upcountry, where all the hippies dwell.
I roamed the riverbanks seeking power rocks.

Found a dead bear
chopped off its head with an ax
skinned it, hung it in a tree until autumn comes.
