The one concern we could have is if one of the major portal sites were to file for registrar status, and none of them have expressed interest. If that were to happen, Network Solutions would face serious competition.

Never thought of the portal being a threat. Hhmm. Looks like NSOL is fighting back with enhanced services:

April 2, 1999--Network Solutions, Inc. (Nasdaq:NSOL - news), the world leader in Web address registration, today announced the installation and testing of a new and separate registry backend system that will allow multiple globally diverse registrars to register domain names.

It's going to be an interesting month for NSOL. I agree with S.O. It's "do ro die" this year for NSOL. LOL !! Went with my gut this last Friday. Long NSOL at 100 even.
