If you know anything about the amount of effort being put into enhancing Samba for IRIX and other ongoing OpenSource projects, I wouldn't count them out yet...

I didn't say linux was irrelevant to SGI. That is not the point of my post, but I am going to shut up now. It is only a request. All are welcome to take it whatever way they want.
