OT--Re: CompUSA

It's true their in store service is for shit--long lines, dumb sales help, some stores good displays some terrible--can be a total nightmare to shop there at holidays in particular--on the other hand, I don't think they'll be a casualty for the following reason:

1) Many people like to shop in stores--hands on and see/feel/try out the goods--w/ hardware anyway
2) They have a 6 months "no pay" policy on their charge card--has appealed to me and I've used it to my benefit, getting hardware/software "free" as long as I pay it off a day before the 6 mos date, which I do
3) Their prices are pretty good
4) They actually carry some good stuff

Seems to me DELL appeals to a more sophisticated, different market

mark...re:comp usa".....urban guerilla shopping...check your gun at the door

have you been to microcenter in st david's...same same...believe most computer retailers in philadelphia area are hiring from the targeted work surplus pool for pennsylvania job credits...the hiring of "septa" (those who take public transportation to work...thank god the store is at a bus stop) people does not add to the level of knowledge and service required in a technical environ...a bit like going to "value city"......and this is the cess pool that 5fer and gerstner want their products displayed in.....yuch!...happy easter ed.a.

p.s...what many don't realize is the urban low end market similar to car buying..."can i get on the internet, lay away or how much a month"....instead of "value versus performance analysis"

I ran into Radio Shack today. I asked the Manager about Compaq. They had two on display in the store. He said that he did not think that Compaq was a good computer. The store models have caused a lot of problems for him. He works M-F in the computer industry. I then asked him what he thought of Dell. He said that Dell is a great product and that he prefers Dell to Compaq. And this is from a store that is supposed to be selling Compaq! Their other manager told me last week that they could not get people in the store to buy their computers.

I also talked to a sales rep at Circuit City about two weeks ago. He said that they were not moving many Compaq's. Maybe I am hearing what I want to hear...
