Interesting how the cable industry has been acting like it is protecting consumer's freedom by fighting the coalition to open cable to competing ISPs, while it is content with local cable monopolies that only provide for a single cable company to compete. And with the deregulation provided by the 1996 telecommunications bill, that single cable provider will be able to raise rates as much as the consumer will bear.

In my community there is a single cable provider, we have the highest cable rates in the area, and the worst service (fewest channels, no cable internet). I had my cable disconnected a couple of years ago (I had to pay for the privilege of their disconnecting it) and switched to satellite.
