< If I ordered one today, I don't know if I could get one this year... > I ordered my propane gen in early February and it doesn't get in until June. Large gasoline generators are backordered thru September. Some of the companies making the smaller propane or gas units won't even take orders because they're already back-ordered into 2000. Mid and large size diesel generators currently have a 45 day lead-time. <[fire marshall] told me that "tons" of people here are getting generators. And that most are gas-fueled, purchased by people who "don't know what they're doing" and who plan to fill their (often attached) garages with gasoline. So he's seeing a suburb littered with potential bombs and fire hazards -- and I don't blame him for feeling that way; he's right. > My generator guy told me the EXACT same thing. FYI - for those that haven't investigated generators yet. Diesel is most expensive, then propane. Gasoline is the least expensive and the least stable of all of the fuels. I think price is often the factor in making the decision. Plus, some probably think if they store gasoline - they can use it for both auto and gen set. If not experienced with generators and fuel storage, anyone trying to set up these systems on their own to save a few bucks is courting disaster. Fortunately, my neighborhood has 2 acre lots - and all are getting or have propane or diesel ... and are not doing the "do-it-yourself" bit. One of my neighbors is a 55-yr old retired fireman from the Bay area, and he's giving all around here some good advice. I'm also fortunate that my next-door neighbor is a nurse. I think I'm gonna get together with neighbors and make sure we each have plenty of long hoses. It sure helps when a neighborhood works together on this stuff, rather than trying to do all in isolation. FYI - I have a 65GPM well. Previous owner hit an underground river. Almost artesian water. I'm getting a "well-bucket" for about for about $60 - just in case something happens to gen system, or g*d forbid this Y2K thing lasts longer than we think, and we're low or run out of propane. I saw someone demonstrate it. If you don't have power, you can drop the long, narrow bucket down into the well and pull-up 2-3 gallons of water. For the low price, I think it's worth getting. Just in case. This is the info Raleigh Martin put out on it: PVC-pipe-shaped well bucket (4ft high, 4.5" diameter; rope needed).jademountain.com . 800-442-1972 Fax 303-449-8266 (needed only if you have a well - provides a fallback if well pump is electric and outage occurs.)
