"We respect human rights," the powerful 71-year-old Premier said in the wide-ranging evening interview, attended by Globe publisher Roger Parkinson, inside the red-walled leadership compound of Zhongnanhai, not far from the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square

Funny, I didn't see any mention of Tibet which they invaded and annexed decades ago.

I wonder how come?

Good thing we just "jaw-boned" China over Tibet so we avoided a world war there. I'm sure we should just huff and puff and threaten to hold our breath over Taiwan and North Korea as well.

You need to start thinking about the agendas of those who would wish to rival the United States and assert their own influence over their neighbors.

China and Russian have a VERY STRONG VESTED INTEREST in opposing US attempts to peacefully resolve conflicts. Such obstruction on their part disrupts and undermines confidence in US leadership.

The US has made so many committments of support to so many nations that all China and Russia have to do is forment conflict in those regions and pressing US resolve.

That is why I highly regret that we became so emotionally involved in the Balkans and put us into a position of backing up our words with physical force.

The Chinese and Russians had it in their means to create the conditions for peace in the Balkans. They chose not to permit the UN to be the lead agency in this matter.

It may be time to up the anty and yank THEIR chains a bit more, both in Taiwan and other areas where THEY have vital interests.

Unfortunately, that how the global power game is played.

The first is only commit to a fight that has direct interests to your nation. Peripheral battles should be fought by your allies in the region who have a direct interest in the outcome (eg: Europe has a direct interest in the stability of Yugoslavia).

And once committed to battle, pursue that fight vigorously and decisively. Pursue it to the extent that those who forced you into battle in the first place derive no political capital out of your sacrifices.

Personal analogy... Don't start the fight, but by damn once you're involved in one, make sure you finish it on your terms.

Only that strategy makes a bully or rival think twice about provoking you again.

Regards,

Ron
