James - 40% of Nortel is owned by BCE which is a holding company which also owns Bell of Canada and other telco holdings. Ameritech has purchased 20% of Bell of Canada. Ameritech wants to merge with SBC. It is assumed that Bell of Canada etc, SBC, and Ameritech will purchase most of their telecom equipment from Nortel because of the interlocking ownership. The merger will create a hugh company with access to over 1/3 of of the phone lines in North American. This is a huge market for Nortel equipment.
