Mobil says shuts Calif. refinery unit after leak

LOS ANGELES, April 2 (Reuters) - Mobil Corp. (NYSE:MOB - news) said Friday it shut a 22,000 barrel-per-day (bpd) refining unit at its Torrance, Calif., refinery because of a small leak, but did not expect a disruption to its refined product supply.

''We have brought the alkylation unit down,'' refinery spokeswoman Carolin Keith told Reuters. ''We have plenty of inventory and we are not anticipating any disruption to supply.''

She added that Mobil would repair the unit after a light hydrocarbon leak. Five employees had minor exposure to the chemicals, but were either treated for headaches or returned to work, Keith said.

The fire department reviewed nearby schools and briefly shut a boulevard, Keith said.

Refinery difficulties in California have helped send gasoline prices on the West Coast soaring, with retail prices in Los Angeles for super-clean CARB unleaded at as much as $1.59 a gallon. Spot prices have been talked at about a dollar in the area and higher in San Francisco.
