Dawg,

8 hours to scan 2% does not sound right. Surface scans are very time consuming but not THAT long. I assume you are running scandisk from the C: prompt?

If it was me I would use the sledge hammer approach and format the drive (after salvaging what files I could), although if the disk is damaged I'm not sure if Windows will even install.

Someone here may have a screwdriver approach whereby you can repair some files or the registry.

Basically it sounds like it's pretty screwed up <g>. Out of curiosity, what program were you trying to install?

Lots of luck,
wily

My suggestion: See if you can get enough info from these files to re-create a bootable floppy for yourself. Obviously, our systems differ, but if you can get yours to crawl, then limp, then walk, perhaps running cannot be too far off.

Please let us know how you progress. We can suggest with more accuracy once we have a clearer idea of what we're dealing with.

Happy Easter, PW.
