wily, "Don't you have to have the uninstall utility running at the time the program is installed for it to uninstall the program?" great question. i think not. i know i loaded the software and then used its move function on files that were on my hard drive before norton's showed up. "but I've gotten along OK without all that stuff so far, and I would just as soon keep things simple" amen to that. don't change what works, right? "I'm probably not exposed to a lot of strange virus-carrying emails that perhaps you are." hahaha! excuse me? just what do you make me out to be, wily? :) actually, i am more concerned about possibly downloading infected software and inadvertently installing it on my machine. norton's is great because i can run a fast virus scan on anything and everything that i download prior to installing it. i wish i had some kind of numbers, but i envision viruses being spread by bad software or a buggy website more so than by email. i think email gets the nod for hoax viruses, no doubt. anyway, back to ie5.0, i've waited to download it until i hear from people like yourself, and gyspy, and others. starting to sound like a browser i can live without. netscape communicator4.5 is everything i need right now. i have ie3.0 on this pc for those rare moments when i'm moved to use a mister softee product, and i have ie4.0 on my other machine. seems like the only time i open ie4.0 anymore is to see how something is done so i can help troubleshoot someone else's problem. something definitely is wrong that you cannot uninstall 5.0, wily. have you gone to the mister softee knowledge base and looked at their faq's for ie5.0? man, this sounds like such a drag. :( " and see about accomplishing something non-computer related in my life..." huh? does not compute. :) keep us posted, wily. mark

wily, have you read this regarding uninstalling ie5.0? If there is a chance you may uninstall Internet Explorer 5 and restore to a prior install of Internet Explorer 4.x or higher, we recommend you create a backup copy of Loadwc.exe, found in the \Windows\System folder, before installing Internet Explorer 5. Note: When you uninstall Internet Explorer 5, Loadwc.exe. is not saved and restored. To restore Loadwc.exe version 4.0, copy the backup version of the file to the \Windows\system folder, and choose to overwrite the newer version when prompted. the above taken from: microsoft.com here are 2 ie5.0 uninstall help sites, in case you haven't already visited them: support.microsoft.com support.microsoft.com the first one is for beta. good luck wily, mark
