you missed my tongue in cheek point....this is a marketing ploy, much used in cellular communications and satellite tv service...it is free to the consumer...but the service provider is buying them from someone....it's a subsidy by the service provider...and if they give one to the 240m citizens of the usa...some white box maker must make and sell them....

it's a basic box that in three years, when they give you a new one won't be capable of naught...re "moores law"....a 333mhz celeron in 1999 is as a 486dx2 66mhz was in 1996...think it thru....
