New PC technology is double edged sword.Consider the obsolete old inventory write down for new tech at half price. SGI is still reeling in red ink as an example.

Well, let's see the earning as a "real barometer".

The issue of the critical technology for AVID appears to me not to lie in any hardware base. In that regard AVID is the leading supplier and can be expected to stay that way. The issue of technology leadership lies in how AVID will cope with the new HDTV standard. High definition requires new software technology for editing and new methods for handling a significant increase in storage requirements.

The question then seems to be is AVID ahead of SONY, its leading competitor, in developing the next generation of editing systems or has SONY conceded the present market and moved ahead on HD?
