So what's wrong with paying for brainpower in cash and accounting for it as an expense? Or if you insist on options, why not account for them as an expense?

Answer: the idea is to hide the cost from shareholders. This is not an issue specific to ASND. It is a pervasive practice in Silicon Valley, and I think it needs to stop. The first step is to explicitly state the cost to shareholders on the income statement.
