Excerpts from a news item in today's Toronto "Globe and Mail", titled "Canada urged to step up computer security."

"Canadian governments have been warned they must greatly increase security on their computer networks to protect them from growing attacks by hackers and cyber-terrorists. . . . Canada is seen both as a target itself and as an access route to otherwise secure computer operations in other countries. Experts point to the fact that U.S. government computer networks have been attacked by hackers who broke into the U.S. systems through their links to Canadian systems. Failure to upgrade the security on Canadian systems is also seen as a potential threat to economic development, as companies locate in jurisdictions that provide more protection to their computerized operations . . . . Any threats to the security of computer networks 'is significant because it can be a limiting factor as to what you can do in terms of electronic business. And if it's a limiting factor in terms of electronic business, it may be a limiting factor in terms of economy' [according to a Canadian official]."

It's an interesting article, in that it posits computer security as an economic necessity for Canada, since "If Canadian governments and companies cannot fully utilize computer networks, it would be as though Canada were still using stagecoaches for transportation while other countries had moved onto railways."

This article fits well into our thesis that economies are beginning to organize around the Internet, and that one element of that system is appropriate security, including authentication.
