Time is of the essence in rendering aid because of the catastrophic proportions of the need so the best approach is to work with existing reputable agencies. I will make some phone calls on Monday to a number of agencies to see how they are coordinating their activities. I'll post later that day from the hotel, since I'll be on the road.

From what I've read so far, the refugees need food, shelter, medical aid and vehicles. Thinking ahead a bit, I see a need for sponsors who would be able to take care of families and individuals either by bringing them to the States (perhaps temporarily) or "adopting" them helping them while they stay in the bordering baltic state, until they can return home.

"Tens of thousands of Kosovo Albanian refugees stranded at the Macedonian border were plunged into total despair at nightfall Saturday as temperatures dropped, more rain fell and busses meant to rescue them stopped coming.

''Eight people died yesterday. Dozens will die tonight,'' said Fisnik Mitushi, one of the local ethnic Albanians organizing aid to the refugees.

I will call the State Department tomorrow to determine if I can sponsor a refugee family to come to the States.
