Dear RMiethe: It is my understanding that Inmarsat, having been established in 1979, has some 86 marketing/regional partners around the world. These partners are mostly composed of large telco's, or as they are known over here in Europe: PTT's. For example, the Inmarsat partner in the US is Comsat Corp, in the United Kingdom is British Telecom, KPN in the Netherlands, etc. Each of these Inmarsat partners in turn then either markets the service directly or through agents, such as the folks at satphone.net in the US. Here in the Czsech Republic, one of the local Inmarsat marketing partners is one of the two country wide GSM mobile phone providers known as Radiomobil/Paegas (http://www.paegas.cz). There is a list on the Inmarsat web site (http://www.via-inmarsat.org) of the partners list world wide. When Paegas introduced the Inmarsat service last year, they sent everyone information about it with their month invoice. I see brochures at outlets where Peagas phones are sold here in Prague. I have also seen marketing from Inmarsat partners in places like the Wall Street Journal, Economist, airline flight magazines and other industry specific publications. When I look to evaluate systems such as Inmarsat, Iridium and Globalstar, I like to start with Price and Availability. So far, Inmarsat and Iridium are the only ones available, and Inmarsat with its $2-3/min for fully terminated calls is the price leader. Just as when a new cellular or PCS carrier enters a market it seems its a bit of a challenge to attract new cusomers when the existing offerings have lower prices, greater availability and experience.
