there are differnt classes of clean room

class 1 very very expensive

.

class 100 not so expensive

so the saving would be based on the class of clean room required

Don, that ECD's memory chips could be made without a clean room is not credible to me - at least without some clear reason for this possibility. Particulate matter in air is typically much larger than the micron and sub-micron feature sizes on chips - ECD' in particular as these will have features about 1/4 micron or less in width. Particules that settle on the chip at any stage of manufacture (at least until the chip receives an "overcoat" layer) will ruin the chip. Getting rid of the enormous number of particles normally in air has been one of the most taxing problems in chip manufacture. The word "clean" with respect to chip manufacture is meant to an extreme degree.

If you can remember where you heard that ECD's technology would not require a clean room, I would like to review what was said.
