<<The new phone, so called "world phone" (UMTS) will be based on broadband technology and be taken in use in year 2000. It will probably be different from the European version, which will be implemented 2001-2002. US plans are open. Other companies chosen were NEC, Matsushita and Motorola. Nokia Telecom's president, Matti Ala-Huhta, says the presence in the group will guarantee all information needed to develop both phones and networks for the new standard. Absent in both phone and network developing groups will be: Northern Telecom, Qualcomm, Alcatel, Siemens, Philips and Sony.">>

And what about Ericsson and Lu? Are they also excluded?

Q might well be absent but guess what? ....WE still get paid!

Eric, the Japanese have been searching desperately for the last five years or so for a technology that would minimize their having to pay royalties to others, such as QCOM. So far, they have been unsuccessful, but Japanese companies, such as Sony, understand better where the future is. I'd say this latest news is one more attempt to put together a coalition in an effort to salvage something from the inevitable. Art
