after one has gained a certain amount of income, it MAY result in a slow down in their performance
I know a lot of folks in this position. In 1996 and 1997, DELL was offering some pretty compelling stock option packages as incentives to CPQ managers. So for example a guy who had been a mid-level manager at CPQ making maybe '70s with a few CPQ options gets a 10% pay raise and 20,000 DELL options, now 80,000 at a basis of about 7 on a 5 year vesting. This particular guy was a marketing type strictly motivated by getting to financial independence which he feels he now has, with over a million vested and the rest vesting at $40,000 per month. He could frankly give a hoot about what happens in the future as long as he doesn't get fired before the rest of the original package vests.
