Disagree. A few weeks ago the Washington Post ran a story about the former CIA station chief in VietNam. He lost favor because he did not think we could win in VietNam, and he died a sad and broken man. He did not oppose the assassination of Diem, which was a tragic mistake. After Kennedy was shot (some VietNamese say by VietNamese seeking revenge), Johnson, and his successor, Nixon, wanted to win because they couldn't imagine not winning.

"What we have here is a failure to communicate." That's what it was, in my opinion, bolstered by things told to me in the course of friendships with former officers in the ARVN.
