this one would be a gem for MSFT.

But MSFT is already one of the five partners in RoadRunner (along with Time-Warner, MediaOne, Compaq, and a private publishing company). Microsoft is also a major investor in ATHM-partner Comcast, but MSFT likes to control things. They seem to have much more control in RoadRunner than they would have as a partner with AT&T and the others in ATHM. I think we'll begin to see the effects of the different partnerships only when internet service is rolled out and the cable companies turn to settop box convergence.

That's the point where the different focus of AT&T+ATHM and MSFT will become apparent. My guess is that Microsoft will encourage its partners to adopt a device-centric solution while AT&T would encourage its partner to adopt a device-independent but network-centric solution.
