Most of the recent posts sound a lot like "whistling past the graveyard."

EBAY has enjoyed a phenomenal PE due in large part to owning the online auction market. Amazon's entry changes the landscape in a dramatic manner literally overnite. EBAY's price still reflects a pre-Amazon investor mentality. The continued strong upward price movement that this thread seems to anticipate is impossible IMHO unless Amazon's auction efforts fall flat - a most unlikely scenario given their prior track record.

The growth that EBAY's price seems to anticipate will have to come largely from people that currently aren't using any online auction service. Amazon is going to get a very significant share of those new users just because that is where they will first "discover" the whole concept of an online auction.

Anyone naive enough to believe that Amazon won't SERIOUSLY detract from wall street's evaluation of EBAY's growth prospects deserves to have their portfolio lightened.

FWIW I do not own shares in either stock.

Doug --I'm surprised the short interest is only 6.7mil shares on EBAY . If I see it go to 10 MIL going into earnings I'm going long , Right now the market is frozen waitng to see how each site improves it position. One thing for sure Yahoo can't afford EBAY after the Broadcast.com deal. EBAY seems to be have a lot of Banner ads and radio plugs these days ++ for it .

Doug,

I appreciate all the post you do on EBAY, and have you book marked as the EBAY expert! I do believe you will be much closer to the growth EBAY will show this quarter as to what Tom Hula thinks. Tom is a very smart SI poster and I have the up most respect for his opinions, but feel as though you have a better handle on EBAY than he does. A couple of observations and a question to ask you or should ask Tom maybe, but where does he get the hits that EBAY says it gets? The 600 million page views that EBAY post have been the same for a number of weeks now. If that figure is right then Tom has a very good point that will need to be figured into the future outlook for EBAY!

Now a few observation, I have a sister, uncle, wife, and myself that have all used EBAY. MY uncle has sold and my sister, wife and I have all bought in the past. My uncle had an attic full of stuff that he has sold and was really happy for the service EBAY performed for him, but he is sold out and no longer lists things on EBAY. My sister collects a couple of china patterns and my wife has a couple of things she collects and I collect old stock certificates, beer cans, and Hallmark kiddie cars and Franklin die cast cars even before EBAY came along. When we discovered EBAY our collections grew by leaps and bounds even to the point that most of our collection are complete now or at least we have what we wanted. Now that we have found what we were looking for, I have to admit that the excitement in my collections have drop off, for it is seems almost too easy to find what I was looking for. Now this may seem crazy, but think about it, we are no longer buyers on EBAY as we once were. My mother said to collect other things, but gosh my house is only so big, and the fun of collecting is not quite what it is when you have to go looking it or would run across an item in a store by surprise.

I bought EBAY in the high 40's before the split and sold for a 150 point gain and thought I made a killing only to regret not keeping it longer. I also believe EBAY is a great site, but by my families expirence, I'm beginning to wonder if the new is beginning to wear off!

Could it be that once many collectors such as myself buy what we need that finishes our collections that we as collectors begin to stop buying as my family members have? I'm neither long or short EBAY at this time, but wanted you to see how and what I'm seeing. Any thoughts?

Hank
