C-Cube to Co-Develop Advanced Digital Video
Applications for PC Platforms With Microsoft

Monday April 5, 8:05 am Eastern Time

Company Press Release

WinHec Keynote Showcases Low-Cost MPEG-2 Encoding Technology

MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 5, 1999--C-Cube Microsystems (Nasdaq:CUBE -
news) today announced that it is co-developing advanced digital video MPEG encoding software with
Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq:MSFT - news).

Microsoft Windows hardware developers will be able to use the software in conjunction with C-Cube's DVxplore(TM) MPEG-2 encoder to design
low-cost MPEG-2 encoding products that deliver digital video editing, digital VCR, and timeshifting capabilities to the consumer PC market.

The new applications will be showcased at WinHec '99 in the Digital Video Technologies seminar as well as in technology demonstrations at the
exhibit hall. C-Cube's chief architect, Les Kohn, will present a paper to Windows hardware engineers on the topic of low-cost MPEG-2 encoding at
the WinHec Digital Video Technologies session.

''C-Cube's low-cost MPEG-2 encoding technology is helping enable an exciting new era of video applications,'' said Carl Stork, general manager of
PC Hardware Strategy, Microsoft. ''We can give consumers an opportunity to interact with and create high-quality video on the PC.''

''WinHec provides a premier opportunity for PC professionals to evaluate the design opportunities for MPEG-2 encoding products,'' said Fermi
Wang, general manager of C-Cube's PC/Codec division. ''Our goal in the development of our new software is to make it easier and faster to bring
DVxplore-based products to market.''

About DVxplore

DVxplore is the PC industry's first single-chip solution for MPEG-2 record and playback in consumer applications. With DVxplore, PC OEMs can
offer digital recording of television programs to DVD disc, CD-R or PC hard disk drive. They can also offer simultaneous record and playback,
allowing consumers to pause, rewind and fast-forward live television broadcasts. DVxplore allows developers to incorporate a ''record'' button into
electronic programming guide (EPG) applications, allowing consumers to easily select and digitally store television shows for future viewing.

DVxplore also enables, for the first time, powerful, yet easy-to-use MPEG-2 video editing applications on the PC. After capturing analog video, or
digital video from a DV camcorder, DVxplore compresses the video into MPEG-2 and allows for frame accurate splicing and editing. The final cut is
then ready for storage, playback or distribution.

PACE: Pace invests GBP800,000 in recruitment drive

04/01/99
M2 PRESSWIRE
Copyright 1999 M2 Communications, Ltd. All Rights Reserved.

Pace Micro Technology has launched a recruitment drive to add at least 100 hardware and software engineers to its Research & Development team (R&D), by the year 2000.

This move follows a number of key contract wins with major digital broadcasters and operators across the UK and overseas. It also forms part of Pace's strategy to expand its R&D expertise to maintain its technological leadership in developing applications for digital TV world-wide.

With 25 per cent of its staff working in R&D, Pace has one of the largest digital TV software teams in the world. The company is recruiting Embedded Software, High Speed Hardware, Test and Printed Circuit Board Design and Layout Engineers. Ideally degree qualified with relevant experience in their field, the company will also introduce a graduate recruitment scheme, investing in the training and development of new engineering graduates.

Pace is aware of the shortage of suitably qualified and experienced engineers in the UK. "The UK education system produces so few engineers," commented Andy Trott, Pace's Director of Engineering, Networks. "The Government needs to encourage young people to become the engineers of tomorrow, through exciting vocational programmes and degrees in schools and universities. To attract the brightest young minds we need to put the glamour back into engineering. Digital engineering is the technology of the future and the Government needs to raise awareness amongst students of the exciting breakthrough of digital technology."

Pace will also launch a dedicated engineering induction scheme, designed to integrate new engineers into the company and quickly increase their understanding and knowledge of Pace's technology and the digital TV industry.

Tim Fern, Engineering Director, Broadcast explains: "The strength of Pace's R&D team is one of the most important elements of our strategy for success. Digital engineering and design is at the cutting edge of modem technology and our engineering team are the pioneers of the technology of the future.

"Recent contract wins with A three major competing digital cable operators in the UK, NTL, Cable & Wireless Communications and Telewest, as well as Bell South Entertainment in the USA for digital MMDS boxes, means that the future for Pace looks exciting," Tim Fern added. "By strengthening our already successful engineering base, we will continue to develop new digital technology solutions for third and fourth generation digital boxes, whilst other manufacturers concentrate on launching first generation models."

About Pace Micro Technology

Pace Micro Technology plc is one of Europe's largest manufacturers of integrated digital receiver decoders, the set-top boxes necessary to receive digital broadcast and value added services. The company is actively involved in all digital TV platforms - satellite, terrestrial and cable - and has played a key role in the creation of the digital pay television market worldwide. By January 1999 Pace had manufactured over 2,000,000 digital set-top boxes that were delivered to 18 international broadcasters in the UK, Europe, Latin America, Australasia and the Far East.

This landmark was reached less than four years after Pace delivered the world's first MPEG -2 digital boxes in volume to Galaxy in Australia in August 1995. The company has also manufactured 6.5 million analogue set-top boxes since it entered the pay television market in 1987. Pace operates in over 80 countries worldwide and its head office is at Shipley in West Yorkshire. The company's shares are traded on the London Stock Exchange.
