I agree. The industrials tend to be huge employers (100,000+) with substantial capital investments in large factories that greatly affect the economies in their regions. This potential to directly impact so many is one reason they are believed to be worth watching.

MSFT doesn't really fit this bill. They employ only about 25,000 most of which could easily find work elsewhere if necessary. Plus MSFT has *no* factory. Most of their business is paper license transactions. Even the shrink-wrapping, etc, is out-sourced. Obviously, they are also worth watching, but not for the same reason as the DJIA members.

You could make a case for INTC, though.
