Mexico's Tribasa tumbles after debt downgrade
MEXICO CITY, April 7 (Reuters) - Shares in Mexico's Grupo Tribasa , the country's second-largest construction firm, fell sharply on Wednesday after Standard & Poor's downgraded its debt to ''selective default.''

Tribasa was off 0.92 pesos, or 15 percent, at 5.20 pesos in morning trading.

''The Standard & Poor's downgrade is driving the stock down,'' one trader said.

On Wednesday morning, S&P said it moved to downgrade Tribasa after the company missed payment of about $26 million, the remaining portion of a $150 million bond due March 16, 1999.

It said it uses the selective default when a bond issuer defaults on one issue or class of issues, but honors others in a ''timely fashion.''

''The downgrade also reflects Tribasa's weak financial profile, with a very limited liquidity position, high financial leverage, and very low cash flow protection measures,'' S&P said.

It said it will review the rating if Tribasa is successful in restructuring efforts via debt refinancing and capital infusions from its shareholders.

Last week Tribasa said it reached an agreement with its creditors to amortize $150 million in debt and to restructure an additional $100 million. It said it would take about a month to finish in the deal.

Tribasa's American Depository Receipts (NYSE:GTR - news) were off 5/16 to 1.
