Strange.

I would definitely check the Device Manager and Performance tab of the System Properties then. The Device Manager should list a CD-ROM at the top of the list. And the Performance tab should let you know if the drivers that you do have installed are possibly causing problems with Windows 9x. Some registry editing might be necessary as a worse case scenario. That would pop up if the Hard disk controller drivers are screwed up or corrupted.

Three suggestions (bang and pray type):

Remove your CDROM from Device Manager (if it's there) and reboot to let Windows find it and start fresh.

Run the DOS program that installs the CDROM driver from the manufacturer's driver disk.

Are you able to enable the CDROM from a startup floppy?
