Since we last looked at remote access servers, vendors have improved performance, refined management interfaces, and added features. The best of the current crop is Ascend's Max 6000; its exceptional throughput and rich feature set earn our Blue Ribbon Award. Scalability is also a strength of Lucent's PortMaster 4, which purportedly can support an impressive 864 simultaneous analog calls. While Lucent plans to acquire Ascend, the vendors do not expect to merge the product lines for some times. Lucent's PortMaster, Ericsson's Tigris 3-Slot and 3Com's Total Control System turned in the most consistent performances, losing less than 1 percent of their download speeds up to the 60-client level.
