maximize your short term personal power Atheists also have family, friends, associates, strangers to worry about. All of the things which you say lead to isolation and empty gratification are likely true, which is why I don't tend in that direction (plus I inherited an empathetic personality in my gene set). At the expense of what? Obviously at the expense of your long term gratification. The maximizing of a group's well being is an irrelevant question, although in my opinion it is a byproduct of the application of the common sense of the "golden rule". G. W.
