NORTHERN TELECOM LTD - Nortel Networks and Compaq Services Join Forces - To
Deliver Unified Networks to Customers Worldwide

Toronto, Ontario, Apr. 05, 1999 (Market News Publishing via COMTEX)
-- Nortel Networks announced that Compaq Services will become a Nortel
Networks Global Solutions Partner. Compaq Services will deliver
consulting, planning, design and integration services for Nortel
Networks Unified Networks solutions.

Unified Networks integrate telephony, video and data traffic over a
single network infrastructure, providing customers with increased
productivity and profitability, end-to-end control and predictability
of their networks, and a significant reduction in cost, complexity and
downtime.

This announcement extends both companies' long-standing strengths in
data networking, telephony and carrier solutions. This relationship is
intended to help customers easily migrate from existing technology to
next-generation Unified Networks environments. Compaq Services will
provide Nortel Networks' customers a suite of lifecycle consulting and
integration services to ease the transition to new technologies. Compaq
Services gains access to the entire Nortel Networks enterprise data
product line, the industry's most comprehensive suite of integrated
voice and data networking technology. Adding the Nortel Networks
product line to its portfolio of offerings allows Compaq Services to
provide its customers leading-edge technology combinations not
available from any other single vendor.

Compaq and Nortel Networks have collaborated on delivering platforms
and applications that enable carriers and ISP's to deliver Internet
call waiting, Web-based conferencing and Internet call button services.
Compaq also builds Nortel Networks' Internet CVX solution for carrier
voice circuit bypass. The two companies intend to continue to find and
exploit similar opportunities that combine Nortel Networks' telephony
expertise with Compaq's high performance platforms and global services.

"Combining Nortel Networks' technology and experience in data
networking and enterprise telephony with Compaq's leadership in
enterprise network integration services, creates a powerful team," said
Robert Daigneault, worldwide vice president of Compaq's Internet &
Networks Integration Practice. "The journey to a common multiservice
infrastructure for enterprise customers requires a solid architectural
plan, sound migration planning, flawless execution and the leadership
technology of a partner like Nortel Networks."

Deploying complex solutions on a global basis requires cutting-edge
engineering capabilities across voice and data technologies. Compaq
Services has the expertise to deliver Nortel Networks' broad suite of
converged voice and data products to enterprises looking to unify their
disparate networks, simplify management, lower operational costs and
improve employee productivity with a sophisticated set of voice
products over existing IP networks.

"Compaq Services' ability to consult with customers on their
convergence strategy is a key enabling element to our Unified Networks
vision," said Dave House, president of Nortel Networks. "Compaq
Services is a global leader in networking, Windows NT and mail systems
integration. These skills will be increasingly important in moving
customers toward tomorrow's integrated telephony/data environment."
