I have friends who are happy with the service.

That alone is significant. It may be a premium service now, but looking for opportunities to invest in companies which begins by selling things/services to people with money is typically a good strategy. I think ATHM fits that category in a way; $40 isn't cheap, but demand for broadband wins out over the wallet for those who can find a way to afford it. Then after some years go by, the service is more affordable for everyone.

AOL began the same way. For many people, buying their first PC was a financially difficult undertaking, but they needed the PC to do what they wanted to do (e.g., access the Internet and then go read and post on the misc.invest.stocks newsgroup...). My first "PC" was bought for $400 when I was in 9th grade in ~1979 (a big chunk of money for a stockboy at the local Shortstop Superette). That TRS-80 Color Computer was a lot of fun. So much so that I spent another $400 to upgrade it to 32k RAM and extended color graphics (I think 320 x 200). I wonder what those go for on eBay...
