Time Warner delves into hub market

NEW YORK--Time Warner is pursuing a plan to develop at least four Internet "hubs" focusing on news, entertainment, business information, and lifestyle issues.

Pieces of the company's Internet business also could be sold to the public to take advantage of strong investor demand for Web offerings. However, an IPO isn't actively being considered now, company officials told The Wall Street Journal last week.

Time Warner will focus instead on building what chairman Gerald Levin calls "vertical hubs" that offer features such as email, e-commerce, chat and search functions, and a focus on specific themes such as news and entertainment.

Company officials say the hubs provide a better way to attract online users and advertisers to content from Warner Bros., Time, CNN, and other businesses than the more generalized portals being developed by Time Warner rivals such as Walt Disney.
