The hypotenuse is the actual path cut by the core. The "run" as you call it is the true thickness. The angle in question would be the slope of the dyke...plus or minus any deviation from vertical, which should be small if any.

The difference at 15 degrees...is roughly a bit less than 3%.

Your point about micrometers and chainsaws should be noted by all. You aren't going to improve on the accuracy of your conclusions beyond the maximum error of any and all of your underlying assumptions.

Here, it's save to assume the true thickness and drill length thicknesses are roughly equal. While the true thickness will be somewhat shorter...you've got bigger possible errors to worry about elsewhere.

Like...how representative is the 200 metre grid? You may feel it's close enough for you...but nobody would realistically claim it's within 3%.
