MMC Networks Announces Douglas C. Spreng as President and Chief Executive Officer

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 5, 1999--MMC Networks (Nasdaq:MMCN) today announced that Douglas C. Spreng, a former executive vice president at 3Com Corporation, has been appointed president and chief executive officer.

Spreng joins MMC Networks with more than 30 years of industry experience, including seven years in executive management at 3Com. He led the growth of 3Com's Client Access Business Unit, which develops, manufactures and markets a variety of network interface cards and modems, from $200 million to $2.8 billion in revenue during his tenure there.

"We are very pleased to have Doug join the MMC Networks team," said Amos Wilnai, chairman of the board. "We were determined to find just the right CEO - with industry knowledge, management talent and a proven track record - who could successfully lead MMC Networks to the next level. We have that person in Doug Spreng."

"Over the years I have been exposed to many promising opportunities to run companies, and I believe the opportunity here at MMC Networks is clearly one of the best," said Spreng. "I am excited to be leading this talented team into our next phase of growth."

Spreng started his career with the Hewlett Packard Company, where he held various marketing, manufacturing and general management positions for more than 23 years. In the early 1990s, he was president and chief operating officer of CellNet Data Systems, a communications system company.

During his years at 3Com, he directed the creation of the company's Fast Ethernet program, he personally led 3Com's winning efforts to build relationships with major personal computer OEMs, and he developed a major strategic relationship with Microsoft, among many other accomplishments.

Spreng holds a BSEE degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
