First-quarter PC demand was
lackluster because corporate customers didn't buy as many
machines as expected, and Intel needs to attract more customers
to its top-of-the-line Pentium III chip family, which is more
expensive and more profitable.
''When business is rocking, price cuts are eliminated, but
when things are dicey, (Intel) moves things up'' and cuts more
aggressively, said analyst Claude Hazan of C.E. Unterberg Towbin,
who rates the stock ''buy.'' The only time Intel has canceled a
planned price cut was in November 1996.
