I don't know whether this view has been expressed already.
But IMHO why AOL-CBS merger makes sense.
There are big three networks. All realized that their love
with traditional analog monopoly may not keep them high in the
next century. So NBC aligned with MSFT to get a better handle on
technolgical sync. ABC is in Disney Land with lot of GO nets.
Now what should CBS do? Merge with the King of internet to become
a one true next generation media company.
This is a win-win for both corporations.
Now attack the market from all connections front
(cable - CBS owns 14 TV stations, dial in ISPs - AOl domain,
DSL - Aol domain, wireless - CBS's radio spectrum).
On top it both can promote each other through their strong presence
each market segment.
Will this bring a strong scrutiny from FCC? Guess not.
With this combination one things that will be missing is streaming
technology. Buy a market leader RNWK and everything will be in place.
Now they can have a true global presence. With that, the seed for
the next Emperor will be in place and will grow within another
5 internet years.

I am happy that today is a Full Day .
