I wouldn't post someone's home address, because what if some whacko investor who lost all his money found the guy and did physical harm to him. I wouldn't want that on my conscious, let alone possible legal implications.

I agree, keep people's home address and phone numbers 100% confidential, no matter whom that person is.

A home phone number or address should *never* be posted here. A business phone number or address is only appropriate for IR/PR people.

Agreed. But my definition of "outing" someone doesn't necessarily mean posting their phone number or address.

I guess the best way to describe my criteria is to say their are two broad classes of people in investing: those that possess inside information and those that don't. Those in the latter group can hype all they want or bash all they want (within reason, of course), as it's strictly their opinion and/or right to dream big. However, those in the former group are in a position to manipulate as they may know when PRs are coming, how earnings will be, etc. It's those people one has to be alert for.

For example, what if you determine someone is an employee? Can they be outed? What if the company in question pays a consultant a bundle of shares (a common S-8 scam) and you have reason to believe that person is posting? That's why I drew the line at "contractually obligated"; these people are in a position to manipulate-- not that they will, but that they can, and what they say must be treated differently than what someone not normally possessing inside information.

I suppose what I'm really trying to define is the word "shill". I think we all agree shills are bad and should be exposed, but rather than go that route I guess I just figure it's safer to reserve such judgment and to simply point out those who post that are in a position to manipulate.

Did that make any sense? (g)

Yo_PeterPaul...............You are either the smartest gaming stock investor in the world or you are a tout for PLAYSTAR, either way I am turning you in to SI BOB and the SEC--we don't want or need SHILLS like you on these boards! I looked at your profile and I see that you have bought fourteen of the most popular gaming stocks at their low and sold at their high and then touted Playstar on each of the other gaming stock threads on SI. You are such a BLATANT SHILL that it is FUNNY!!

>>. . . relevant example, . . . a person posting on SI was a company insider or just a shareholder whose holdings were large enough to require inclusion in certain SEC filings. Though this person posted using their real name, and it matched what was included in the SEC filings, it was not appropriate for their home or business phone number and address to be posted on SI.<<

I trust it would be fair game to point out the fact that the poster was such an insider (director or non-IR/PR exec) or 13D filer? And to say that his business address was the company in question (without giving the address?)?

This seems a pretty fine line, especially if it appears (as it does in your example) that the poster is not coming clean with the readers of his posts. In such a circumstance, posting his address would seem to be appropriate.
