PlusMedia Station set to play

JAPAN — Sony Corp. has developed the PlusMedia Station, a set-top box designed to distribute digital content to and control devices in an A/V home network. The product, also known as HomeGateway, will run on Sony's operating system, the Aperios, and use i.Link, the firm's version of the IEEE-1394-1995 specification.

The PlusMedia Station can also functions as a receiver for SkyPerfecTV!, a Japanese satellite communication broadcasting service.

Using a 28-MHz bandwidth for data broadcasting, the unit will enable viewers to download music via its MPEG audio and adaptive transform acoustic coding (ATRAC). MPEG-2 video will be used for regular broadcasting.

"PlusMedia Station is what we think a set-top box should be. As the concept of PlusMedia Station existed in advance, we have developed key technologies such as i.Link." says Yukio Kubota, deputy president of Sony's Digital Network Solutions Co.
