Patton gave evidence repeatedly of a fantastic, vain, self-destructive personality. A hell of a soldier, but clearly some kind of nut. I understand from my reading that Powell spends much of his time rebuilding old worn-out vulvas, or something like that. Seems strange to me.

Hell, Eisenhower was a twice passed over Captain until WWII. Very little charisma. Yet he became the commander of the decade. If he had a clone to win the presidency there would never have been a cold war like we saw.

What's ironic is that he was the first President to which journalists began ascribing "charisma". I like Ike, too. May have been the best President of our lifetime. There's an excellent biography of him, The Hidden Hand Presidency. The book dispels the idea that Eisenhower was just a nice grandfatherly guy who played golf while he was in office, and who wasn't paying attention. Eisenhower cultivated that smiling, friendly, image and used it to his great advantage. The years of being Supreme Allied Commander without incurring the wrath of all the enormous egos around him had taught him a thing or two about how to get things done.
