Great post, Vaughn. I don't have anything as valuable to contribute, but here's a tidbit for anyone who might be interested:

The March issue of the Atlantic Monthly has an article on diamonds. Titled "How to Steal a Diamond", it's mostly about southern Africa, and the goings on down there ... SUF is mentioned briefly, regarding their troubles in Angola ... there's some interesting stuff about the perils and pitfalls of diamond cutting ... as well as an observation that a criminal class seems to arise wherever diamonds are found, which might have negative implications for the NWT in years to come ...
