That is true- my dad was a bomber in the pacific theatre- he used to say (when asked, because he never volunteered information) that he spent the second half of his war bombing Japanese gardens. The first half he spent as a grunt in the jungles of guadal canal. He transferred mid- war to the air corps.

My understanding is that they were prepared to fight to the last man and an invasion of Japan would have been a disaster for Allied troops. They had already invaded Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima with large losses. The A Bomb made Japan file for unconditional surrender.
