It may be calculating, or maybe just seem calculating, but you have to develop your support system before you need it. There is a definite social psychology around gifts, even gifts of time and attention. You should establish reciprocity now, before you need it. I can't imagine a donee who can't repay the donor with something, be it something from the garden or something from the oven or help with a chore. If you give and never take, you make the donee beholden to you, and ashamed. Giving without taking is saying "I'm richer than you."
