Stockhouse.com News Maker Interview - Mar. 29, 1999

An Interview with LaserMedia CEO Richard Hue and Chief Technology Officer Aldo Baiocchi

Included below are excerpts of Monday's StockHouse interview with LaserMedia CEO Richard Hue and Chief Technology Officer Aldo Baiocchi. Mr. Baiocchi is one of Canada's leading multimedia software pioneers, having developed and managed over 30 successful CD-ROM titles, Including Game Empire CD, which sold 2 Million Units. Richard Hue brings over 17 years business management and investment knowledge. Mr. Hue was president of RT Equity Inc., a boutique merchant banking firm in Toronto, Canada that currently manages many investments in the technology sector.

Actfit.com is the first fully interactive health and fitness site on the World Wide Web. Its revolutionary graphical interface takes it a step beyond the traditional, passive website into a new world of interactivity, giving the site the look and feel of a CD-ROM or video game. Actfit.com will launch their first Interactive Television workout program, featuring Ms. Fitness America, on Tuesday, April 20th.

StockHouse: Aldo Baiocchi, you're the Chief Technical Officer. What exactly does the LaserMedia website (www.actfit.com) provide that makes it interactive?

Aldo Baiocchi: The site features flash technology, which is a much more powerful tool compared to regular HTML. It features 3D visuals with pop-up menus and sound.

StockHouse: But what makes it interactive?

AB: The atmosphere is a lot more friendlier, and we have a lot of interactive software and features on the site itself.

StockHouse: Mr. Hue, you're the CEO. What does your site offer to the health and fitness enthusiast?

Richard Hue: The health and fitness enthusiast log on to our site on a weekly basis, to catch up on health and fitness articles. We sponsor an e-zine called FitWeek. We have software-training tools on the site. Our Workout Generator online will be coming probably in May. We host a variety of other sports and fitness sites where they can get interactivity and information. The main thing will be the convenience and the interactivity. You'll be able to try out the equipment virtually, of course, on a 3D environment...there's just more convenience, today, shopping online than there is going to the store.

StockHouse: Mr. Hue, you're trying to launch the first interactive workout with Ms. Fitness USA. How's this going to work out?

RH: We're going to be offering a half-hour workout session with Sherry Goggin, who's Ms. Fitness America. That will be done live from her gym in California. Afterwards there will be a live chat with her on our chat line.

StockHouse: Has anyone actually ever done a workout on the Internet?

RH: No, not the way that we're going about doing it and how interactive it'll be.

StockHouse: Why don't I just watch ESPN instead of just going up on your site?

RH: The difference here is that you have accessibility to it when you need it. We will be filing it as content at our site, and you can come back to it on a consistent basis.

StockHouse: So anytime I want to work out with Ms. Fitness USA, I just go back to your site?

RH: There'll be a catalog over the course of the next year. There'll be a catalog of various workout techniques with Sherry.

StockHouse: So if I want to strengthen my abs, or I want to strengthen my pecs, or I want to strengthen my biceps, there's gonna be different workouts?

RH: Exactly. That's exactly what we're doing with it.

StockHouse: Mr. Baiocchi, www.actfit.com page views jumped from nothing to 1.1 million in the first quarter. How big are you going to get in the next year?

AB: I think if we keep on going the way we're going we'll probably have about 15 million page views (monthly), a year from today.

StockHouse: Mr. Hue, you're growing through alliances, and other means. I heard there's a rumor that you're going to launch a fitness e-commerce site.

RH: Correct. We're in the process right now of signing up some major dealers, or major distributors, where we'll be launching close to 4,000 products on the Internet starting next month. They'll be coming online.

StockHouse: You were in San Diego over the weekend at a fitness convention. How did that go?

RH: Correct, the URSA convention in San Diego. Things went very well there. We're in the process right now of negotiating with some major manufacturers to create some interactive content. They will be sponsoring our gymnasium, a major manufacturer.

StockHouse: Why should I buy the stuff from you? Why don't I just go to my local store?

RH: The main thing will be the convenience and the interactivity. You'll be able to try out the equipment virtually, of course, on a 3D environment. Aldo has created a program in order to do that. There's just more convenience, today, shopping online than there is going to the store.

StockHouse: There's a ton of websites devoted to health and fitness. Mr. Hue, you hope to capture a lion's share of this market. How do you plan to do this?

RH: There's over 15,000 health and fitness sites today on the web. What distinguishes us and makes us different is our complete interactivity. It's more exciting. It's just like going to the gym and working out. Eventually the routine becomes monotonous. You get bored. We create a lot of interactivity, and hopefully from the content that we present, that it will bring people on a consistent basis.

StockHouse: Thank you very much. Look for future StockHouse interviews every Monday at Noon Eastern Time, 9 a.m. Pacific Time. For a list of upcoming guests, visit www.bizsoup.com.
