While you can make a good case for this, a lot of people don't want to go through the decision process of finding the "best" ISP and go with what's convenient and easy. The problems that exist with AOL as a provider are just put up with because it isn't that critical to log on at a certain time to check email or surf. Once they've gotten started, it is easier to stay and not check for a better service.

It's partly being a "dummie" and partly being a case of not wanting to spend the time to get better service when AOL gives service that they can work with without any more effort.
