My fault, Scumbria, you're right. Still, like you said, there is a penalty for the added latency, which would be more than made up for by the reduced accesses to slower L2 cache. (If the penalty outweighed the benefits, then AMD wouldn't have gone with an oversized L1 cache, I guess.)

Reducing the accesses to L2 cache is doubly important for the first incarnation of the K7, which is likely going to have a rather weak L2 cache compared to Xeon and Coppermine.
